Performing Shirshasan !

Shri. Manoj Parihar, is serving in a private financing Pvt. Ltd, at  BKC, Mumbai. But he has passion for practicing Yogasanas. So, he is attending  The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, and learning Yoga  under Guru, Hansa ma and Smt. Promil madam.

'Shirshasan' or 'Headstand' as it is referred in English language, is considered by the Yogacharyas as one of the most complicated and most useful Asanas among the Asanas. At the same time, it should be done after practicing many of the Asanas after  acquiring sufficient strength to the shoulders, and neck.

In the beginning one has to practice in a room where the two walls meet. Let the body get the sufficient strength to balance and one should feel ease in performing most of the Asanas.

 1. Please be patient as in every case slow and progressively  you will master the technique. Keep calm.  Practice daily without skipping in between. A small blanket or towel, folded can be placed underneath  your head would rest so that you do not feel any pain on the crown. This will also provide better cushioning for your spine while doing the headstand. For a beginner, before you even think of starting the pose, your body to be strong enough to withhold your body weight.  You need to build  arm strength, without which your body would not be able to achieve balance in headstand.

2. Use the  support of a wall in the corner and correct the posture. Generally yoga teachers will not expect you to get the pose correct at one go, and they will advise you to take as much help as you can get.

3. Practice meditation before you start, so that you can calm down and do it, The upside  down pose helps to increasing blood flow to the brain, which in turn, improves the mental function, and increases focus and sharpening the mind.  The eye sight will improve.

4. Shirshasan  pose ensures that more oxygen and nutrients are supplied to the head, thus taking care of your vision in the process. It also helps in curing problems of hair fall, headaches, anxiety, and stress.

5. Focused breathing helps in  improving the  digestion. The reversed flow of blood helps in releasing toxins from the body, any stuck gases, and improves the circulation of blood to digestive organs.

6. Shirshasan has many good things for the seekers.  The posture increases blood circulation and works out muscles of arms, shoulders, and core body. Additionally, it also affects pituitary and pineal glands, which create energy in the human body.

7. Inhale and shift the weight of your upper body to your elbows. Ensure that your elbows are shoulder width apart. Now clasp your hands together by interlocking your fingers. Bring down your head to the mat, in between the palm of your hands, ensuring that it is pressed against the palms.

8. Inhale and raise your knees and hips up, elongating the spine, and ensuring that your shoulder blades are kept away from your ears, even though they should be right under your shoulders.  Once in position, slide forward towards your arms such that your hips are stacked over your shoulders.

9. Ensure that your back is not rounded. Stay rooted into your hands, shifting most of the weight onto your arms so that the pressure on your head is lighter. make sure that your body is ready, lift one leg slowly while rooting the other to the ground. Ensure that the raised leg is straight and not turned in. Raise your other leg too. When both legs are up, join them together for balance.

10. Remain in the pose for as long as you can while maintaining steady breathing. To release yourself from the pose, slowly lower one of your legs down till the toes touch the ground and once the balance is obtained lower the other leg too. relax,

End of the Shirshasan resembles the action of an Aeroplane :

If one observe the landing of an Airplane, the speed of the plane is reduced to minimum, wheels are brought down and the landing takes place.

Apart from the Yogasanas, the Surya namaskar, and exercises with the help of Gymnasium machines  are also very helpful. At Himalaya Joggers' park, open air Gymnasium machines are installed.
